Zika virus and its potential effect on pregnancy has erupted in the news headlines recently. The concerns for the presumed association between exposure, infection in pregnancy, and neonatal microcephaly has led some countries in central and south America to issue travel and pregnancy warnings.

Zika virus is a Flavivirus that is similar to Dengue and Chikungunya. Transmission of the virus is primarily through the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito. This species of mosquito tends to be fairly aggressive and bites throughout the daytime hours.

At Austin Perinatal Associates, we are specialists who act, primarily, as a referral-based practice. “Referral-based” simply means that you have your own obstetric care provider and we act as a consultant. Usually, your obstetrician, family physician or midwife will recommend that you make an appointment at our office for some concern, pre-existing medical condition, exposure or risk involving your pregnancy. On occasion, we may simply act as the medical facility entrusted to do normal ultrasound imaging for your normal pregnancy.
